Heritage Week 2020 -Memorials of Educators and Schools
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Heritage Week 2020 moved from physical events to virtual projects. In response to the Heritage Week theme ‘the heritage of education,’ a project was published to explore Registry of Deeds memorials relating to educators and schools.
The first memorial featured relates to a bluecoat (charity) school for girls in Waterford founded in 1740. The project then examines a memorial of indenture of mortgage for St. Enda’s school founded by Padraig Pearse. It also highlights a memorial signed by Margaret Skinnider the Scottish teacher turned soldier, and another by Eamon de Valera, who began his career as a maths teacher at Carysfort teacher training college in Blackrock, Co. Dublin.
