Changes to the practice of accepting and retaining Grants of Probate
The practice of accepting and retaining Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration has been changed. Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration should only be submitted with an application lodged for registration and not lodged in advance of same. TÉ does not own or create probate records. Pre-registration lodgement of probate records is not a requirement for registration. It is not a function within our statutory remit to store originals and/or provide copies on request to interested parties.
TÉ Registration will accept Probate office copies or certified copies. The Probate Office issues Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration and can provide certified copies on request. Records prior to 1992 are held by the National Archives of Ireland who can also provide certified copies.
This decision has been made by the Registration Senior Management Team (RSMT) and is now in effect.
